Last my tree

Image
The last post for the year is about my tree that I have been observing all semester. This tree was the largest one I could see from my bedroom window. This tree is so large it is hard to see if there is any buds or flowers, now that the spring time is approaching. I thought there would be leaves by now. I think there is at least buds. I do not see any flowers or leaves. Based on what we predicted in the beginning of class, I thought the trees would have leaves by now. We had a late spring because there was snow in late March and April. I do not think our class anticipated having a late spring. I would have thought by the end of april here would be leaves and in full bloom. It is different living in an apartment compared to a dorm. It is different living in an apartment and not in a house. We do not have a lawn or a porch to enjoy the outdoors. I live in an apartment now and no longer in a house at home in Massachusetts. I now have more of an appreciation for the outdoor...

Sustainable living and the Asian Elephant

Image
Sustainable living and the Asian Elephant Endangered species This photo is of an Asian Elephant. There massive tusks are for self defense and knocking down food from trees. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_elephant We were asked to discuss the uniqueness of an endangered species. I choose to do the Asian Elephant presented above. This animal is so unique because of its size. One of the largest land animal to date, which thrive in the tropical rainforest of Asia. They known to be extremely sociable animals, forming groups up to seven relatable females, with the oldest female as the head of the herd (World Wildlife Fund, 2018). Male elephants rome and are competeive of territory by nature. Elephants adapt to their environment by staying near a water source and staying in large groups for protection. Their ears are made up of million small blood vessels creating their own cooling system (The National Elephant Center, 2018). The Asian Elephant biome is the tropica...

Open Ocean Threats and Description Week 9

Image
Open Ocean Description and Threats Biome The open ocean is a very unique biome. T he open ocean is described as a dessert because there is little to no productivity. Even though the ocean takes up 71% of the earth the area per square foot is so low in productivity. This is the open ocean on a calm cloudless day Photo from staticflickr.com  Sunlight and temperature are the two most important abiotic factors The temperature is constantly changing. When water is warmer it is less dense. When the water is cooler the water is more dense. The density of the water affects ocean and wind currents. When the sunlight hits the ocean only a little of it is affected by sunlight, this zone is called photiczone. This is where most aquatic organisms thrive. This is where the top primary producer, algae performs photosynthesis. Algae makes up to 70% of the oxygen in the atmosphere. This is a large area covered with algae. The rich color is a product of photosynthesis.   Ph...

Environmental and Health Impacts of oil consumption week 5

Image
Oil spills and marine life We are consuming oil at an alarming rate so alarming that there are significant environmental impacts and health impacts to all personnel involved. Humans obtain oil to consume for their need of resources. This resource is used for heating our homes and powering our cars. The way this resources is obtained is through drilling and fracking. Drilling is a direct contact with the oil where the ground is penetrated and oil is then leaked. Fracking is pumping of high temperature water which then replaces the oil which is then released. Some environmental impacts of consuming oil is the surplus of greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere. Regarding the atmosphere oil spills also affects phytoplankton and algae which produces a great deal of the oxygen in the atmosphere (harpers.com). Temperatures than make our ice cap shrink losing ecosystems for organisms. When there are oil spills such as the one in the Gulf of Mexico. There was a coat of ...

My tree week three

Image
My tree is located on Arcadia Apartment grounds. I chose this tree because it is a tree I look at every day out side of my window. This tree is as tall as the four story apartment building. During the fall this tree has bright red leaves. During summer and spring time it is a stunning green. I have seen it flower, as I will again this spring. It has tiny buds that turn into flowers which turn into the dark green leaves. I do not know what type of tree it is yet. Growing up in my childhood house we had the oldest tree in Holliston in our yard which I took pride in telling my classmates in elementary school. We couldn't cut down any branches and the town paid for getting the leaves removed from our yard since it was historical. There was even a plack on it with the year. My childhood tree took up my whole yard it even came up to my bedroom window. This is why I chose my tree because I could see it from my window so I can see it every day just like when I was a child. My tree now ge...

First post second blog

Took me a moment to figure out how to make a new blog since Iv'e already had one for another environmental class. Enjoyed it in the past, lets see where this one will go
